In June 1933 BB began a series of cartoons for the Daily Herald, depicting Old Bill’s observations as a spectator at the World Economic Conference which was taking place at the Geological Museum in London, attended by delegates from 66 nations.

After two weeks of cartoons focusing on the conference, BB started a daily single panel series, in which Old Bill was seen commenting on a wide variety of topical and social events, generally accompanied by Bert.

If any organisation or society was holding a meeting, conference or lecture, Old Bill was there. Among others, he was seen at the Royal Show, the Oxford Peace Conference, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Lily Exhibition, the Great Yorkshire Hound Show, Northumberland Miners’ Gala, The Pharmaceutical Conference, and the Crystal Palace Bee Show. In November 1933 he was even elected as the new Member of Parliament for Great Muddleton!

From January 1934 until his last cartoon for the paper (27 March 1934), all of BB’s drawings had a sporting theme, mostly with Bill attending a football or boxing match.

BB drew a total of 210 cartoons for the Daily Herald, a selection of which are reproduced below.
