Fragments from France Merchandise

Between 1916 and 1919 the publishers of The Bystander issued reproductions of Bruce Bairnsfather's 'Fragments from France' cartoons in various formats on a huge variety of merchandise, generating a huge revenue stream for themselves, in the wake of Bairnsfather's huge popularity. Although The Bystander paid him a royalty on the sales of the first couple of volumes of 'Fragments from France' and colour prints, which was a substantial amount to him at the time, the cartoonist received no income from the sales of any of the merchandise issued after July 1916.
